NEWPORT DREDGING NEWS

Newport Waterways – maintenance dredging

We are undertaking scheduled maintenance dredging works within the Newport Waterways canal estate.

The project involves the removal of approximately 31,000 cubic metres of sediment from within the canal. It will be transported via pipeline, placed and treated (as necessary) at Council’s Griffith Road Dredged Material Rehandling Facility (Section 19 Pond). Maintenance dredging of the canals will improve navigational safety for all canal users.

Works generally occur between 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday to Saturday, excluding public holidays.

Stay up to date with project updates.

Dredging is scheduled to commence in late – November 2025 and will be ongoing for a period of approximately five (5) months, weather permitting. The location and proposed sequencing of dredging is as follows.

  • Walkers Creek Canal (Zone 2)

(Christmas / New Years Shutdown Period)

  • Kingfisher Canal (Zone 1, 2, 3)
  • Northern Marina
  • Albatross Canal (Zone 4)
  • Curlew Canal (Zone 1)
  • Skua Canal (Zone 1)

Scope of works

The scope of the maintenance dredging works will encompass:

  • preparatory works at the Griffith Road Dredged Material Management Facility
  • pre-work hydrographic survey of the dredging areas before the commencement of dredging works
  • removal of dredged material by a cutter-suction dredge. This includes the movement of dredged material to the Dredged Material Management Facility
  • post-work hydrographic survey of the entire Newport Canal system after dredging works.

Dredging timeline

  • Site establishment: 17 November 2025
  • Dredge mobilisation: 25 November 2025
  • Dredging commencement: 27 November 2025
  • Duration: approximately five months, subject to weather conditions.
  • Working hours: Monday to Saturday, 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, excluding public holidays.

The Newport Waterways canal system is narrow in places. The dredging contractor will ensure that the impact of other vessels’ use of the waterway is minimal.
